Linksys has launched its WIP330 802.11b/g Wi-Fi-connected VoIP phone in Europe - the company's first wireless handset to made available to buyers over here - after announcing the device at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin last week.

JAJAH has announced its web-activated telephony service will be available on mobile phones as early as May 2006. This announcement follows the signing of exclusive agreements to intergrate JAJAH within Opera browsers and the Symbian OS.

For now, Symbian phones represent a minuscule fraction of the nearly 2 billion cell phones in circulation, and many are used by mobile professionals. Symbian is significant despite the low market share because major cell phone makers control the company that owns the operating system. The handset makers intend Symbian to serve as the basis for next generation handsets to come.

JAJAH is also to become an addition to the Opera Web browser for both personal computers and cell phones. Opera has small, cult-like following among personal computer users that, in comparison, pales to the market share of the leading browsers, but it's a brighter story when focusing on cell phones. About 20 million cell phones, many of them using Symbian, come with the browser already loaded.

EarthLink is offering a new VoIP service, which is designed to be easy-to-use without the requirement of additional hardware.

Earthlink has collaborated with broadband access wholesaler Covad Communications to offer the VoIP service in Dallas, Seattle and the San Francisco-San Jose area from this week itself.
EarthLink is bundling the new service with DSL broadband access.

Anyway, more cities in Covad’s operating territory are pegged to offer the service later this year. However, EarthLink would not specify which of these cities are in the line.

Currently VoIP services, including the one EarthLink currently sell for $20 a month, the new service wouldn’t require consumers to add hardware. This means that the customers can use their existing phones and plug them into phone jacks like those that they do with any regular telephone service.

The technology, called ‘line-powered voice’, puts all the intelligence and equipment for offering VoIP service in Covad’s central office, where all the gear to provide the DSL service is housed.

Linux Phones with VoIP Capability in 2006

Trolltech Qtopia Phone 2.2 is the first Linux-based system for phones and wireless handhelds to support VoIP technology, according to Trolltech. It includes a reference open-source VoIP application using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).

Qtopia is a user environment that includes ready-made applications such as a phone dialer, personal information management (PIM) tools, and an email client. Versions of Qtopia Phone are used by Motorola and Chinese handset makers such as Cellon.

Other enhancements in Qtopia Phone version 2.2 include an SMS client capable of sending messages to groups of recipients, and a general revamp of the look and feel of the user interface.

Taiwan-based Accton Technology Corp. unveiled in Tokyo Monday what it is touting as the world’s first mobile phone with built-in Skype software that can be used to make free calls over the Internet without the aide of a personal computer.
The company said in a press release that the WiFi SkyFone WM1185-T wireless mobile phone will benefit more than 50 million customers of Skype as well as companies and households which have not yet used Skype, because they can use it to make peer-to-peer (P2P) Internet calls to any phone users in the world without having to switch on their computers.

The ZyXel Prestige 2000W VoIP wireless phone is one of the very first wireless VoIP phones to come out. The technology allowed VoIP users to achieve the ease and portability that was previously limited only to telephone users. The phone received mixed reactions, however, because while its range is unexpectedly long, its battery life is relatively short.

MobileMag review:

The effective range on the 2000W is one of its strongest points. I was surprised at some of the access points it had found, it was picking up networks that my Powerbook was unable to find. Zyxel rates the operating range at up to 300m out-doors and 75m in-doors, I won’t argue those stats.
